The lessons that Peekay learns throughout his journey in the the book "The Power of One" had a great affect on his life. The most important of these "lessons" I think happened at the prison. When the lieutenant of the prison ward, and boxing coach, decided to have pictures. As they were getting set for the picture, lieutenant Smit asked if a prisoner named Geel Piet would join the picture, Geel Piet was Peekay's personal trainer, and almost everyone stepped out of the picture, leaving only Peekay's closest friends Doc, Gert, and Geel Piet. "The photograph captured the exact moment when I understood with conviction the racism is a primary force of evil designed to destroy good men". This "lesson" cultivated his true "Power of One".
What is the "Power of One"? The "Power of One" to me is someones will. It is how someone acts towards other people and to them selves. It determines if the person "Controls" their destiny, or have someone make the decisions for them. If someone is at one with them self and can "control" their destiny, then they have truly understood what having the "power of one" truly means. When Peekay got his picture taken with the African American in the prison, he realized that people don't have to act the same way that everyone else does. Peekay learned that he doesn't have to be racist. He learned that someone does not move him around like a puppet, that he can make his own decisions. The thing he learned that is the most important is, that he has the "power of one" inside and no one can change that.

Significant "Lessons" in Peekay's life
In Peekay's journey he found him self going to prison to visit his friend. He spent very much of his time in prison and learned very valuable "lessons". "You must box like a Mozart piano concerto, fast and light with perfect timing". As Geel Piet said "I had to box with my feet". "The photograph captured the exact moment when I understood with conviction that racism is a primary force of evil designed to destroy good men" Doc once said that "you should ask before you look". "you must go saftey first, klein baas, box, box, box, never fight".
When Peekay went to his new boarding school, he met some friends that taught him some "lessons" as well. "Now my theory is that to beat the system you have to know it intimately. Rebellion is senseless, and being pointedly different only leads to persecution. The only way to control a system is from the inside". "I can only accept a loan if you'll let me do something to pay it off". "it was the first time we'd beaten the system, although of coarse it was Morrie had really done so, although I Guess that's what being partners is all about". "From little acorns mighty oak trees grow". "Racism does not diminish with Brains".
